The His Dark Materials TV adaptation is out Nov. While the shocking scene presents a whole new set of questions in the final moments of the season, the cliffhanger ending is more in line with the moral complexity of the books and perfectly sets up the adventures to come in Season 2. The TV series stays true to this much darker ending, which asks viewers to reexamine their feelings toward the seemingly admirable Lord Asriel. There, Lyra tracks down Lord Asriel only to witness him kill her best friend Roger (Lewin Lloyd) in order to travel to a parallel dimension. However, Pullman’s first novel, Northern Lights, ends much more ambiguously. So in the film's finale, the abducted children escape the Gobblers’ base in the midst of an epic battle. Given the kid-friendly nature of the The Golden Compass, it makes sense that the filmmakers would want to end on a happy note. The show also gives more screen time to important yet less prominently featured characters like Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), diving into the explorer’s research in a way that sheds light on the story's central conflict.
Coulter (Ruth Wilson) and the tough decisions that have led to her current station - and makes her strained relationship with her daughter, Lyra (Dafne Keen) more empathetic. The series provides more detail about Mrs. Given its substantially longer format, the TV series of His Dark Materials is able to spend much more time on world-building and digging into the details that made the book series a success - particularly when it comes to character development. The end result was a film that left many of the relationships feeling forced and the characters one-dimensional. While The Golden Compass director Chris Weitz initially drafted a script of more than 200 pages, the final film was whittled down to just 113 minutes, condensing much of the story and leaving out many of the details that brought the novels to life.
